Chapter Twelve

John watched Donna walk out of the building hand in hand with Adam. She smiled up at the man when he opened the passenger door for her. He had to admit that she looked good. She wore a peasant top with jeans. Her hair hung loosely around her shoulders. It had been a long time since he had seen her smile like that at anyone. Her grin was so brilliant it was almost blinding. Years of sadness and pain washed away under the warmth of the sun.

He shook his head and smirked. It looked as if the seducer was being seduced. She could just be doing her job, but he doubted it. She never had been that great of an actress. From the beginning, he’d had doubts she would pull this whole thing off. A little happiness changed a woman in her position. He had seen a lot of his girls turn from the lifestyle after finding someone who treated them better. Too bad you didn’t leave the life, the life left you. Too many times he had to put down lovesick bastards that thought they could take his ladies from him. They were his money makers and only when they were dried up or ugly as sin did he cut them loose.

From the recon they had done, Lust liked to visit the farmer’s market on Saturday. He had been waiting all morning, hoping they would make an appearance. His fingers drummed rhythmically on the steering wheel, his patience wearing thin as he watched them get into the sleek blue sports car. Rich bastards always had nice cars, he thought.

Sneering, he heard the engine growl to life and pull away from the curb. Keeping a suitable distance from them, he tailed them in his black SUV. Arriving at the packed farmer’s market, he parked a few rows down from them. He fumbled with the glove-box, pulling his gun out and tucking it into his waistband.

Stepping out of the car, he watched them approach the gathering of canvas tents. The asphalt parking lot was almost full and people walked around the grassy park. Farmers, bakers, and more had booths set up. The sound of conversation and kids laughing on the nearby playground was overwhelming.

Leaning against a tree, he waited patiently for them to separate. He would have to get her alone and drive home what needed to be done. He just had to find a private place to talk.
